How Does 4D Golf Provide a Multi-Sensory Experience to People with Disabilities?

At a local 4D glow-in-the-dark golf course, a group of friends from Conkers at Hollybank played a round of golf together at Xscape in Castleford, each using the customised elements to suit their needs.

What is a 4D Golf Course?

A 4D golf course is a revolutionary revamp of the traditional golf game, which goes above and beyond to engage the senses, making for a more stimulating experience than the classic pitch and putt.

The rise of innovative and inclusive sports experiences, such as the 4D golf course, is transforming the way we think about accessibility in sports. This new, ground-breaking form of golf not only accommodates people with various disabilities but also offers them a fully immersive, multi-sensory experience that levels the playing field and enriches their lives.

On a 4D golf course, technology is used to simulate various elements such as wind, vibrations, sounds, and even smells, creating a dynamic and immersive environment for golfers. A 4D course can cater to golfers with cognitive disabilities by offering simplified rules or visual reminders. The 4D golf course is designed with inclusivity in mind, providing wheelchair accessibility, auditory cues, vibrations, visual indicators, tactile feedback, and even voice-assisted devices, helping them navigate the course.

Two Immersive Courses to Choose from at Xscape

The adults we support at Conkers had the option of escaping to two new mysterious worlds brought to life with ultra-violet light, strange sounds and special effects. The epic quests of the golf courses that our adults embarked on included searching for a mystical lost underwater city in ‘Search for Atlantis’, then rescuing the lost Professor Knochendigger in ‘Curse of The Mummy.’  This glow-in-the-dark 4D golf adventure creates a high-tech, sensory-rich experience including tactile feedback and interactive soundscapes tailored to the aesthetic of the golf course.

From the moment our adults stepped onto the golf course, adopting their golf swing and adopting their golf stature, the immersive nature of the experience provided consistent sensory inputs that helped each person stay focused and enjoy the game. Each of the players, with limited mobility, were able to access all areas of the course comfortably, navigating the course in their wheelchairs. Auditory cues, visual cues and vibrational cues made for an immersive experience for players, letting them track the ball’s movement and allowing them to try to improve their golf swing on their next turn. For these golfers, the experience felt empowering, with every individual able to fully engage with the game in their own way. The game struck up some healthy competitions amongst players as they tried to score a hole-in-one, competing against their friends

The 4D golf course offered a unique opportunity in a non-competitive atmosphere, fostering interactions between the people who we support who live under the same roof together and enjoy activities together Hollybank Trust. The enriching multi-sensory essence of a 4D golf course transforms a standard game of golf into an immersive experience that encourages learners to use more than one of their senses when taking in new information. For our players with disabilities, this enrichment made golf more enjoyable, allowing them to focus on the fun and challenge of the game rather than on limitations imposed by physical barriers.
