Residents Learn Makaton Signs for the Lyrics of Classic Songs & Anthems

On the week of Makaton International Awareness Day this year, our residents and staff held their very own Sing and Sign session in our school hall at our main site in Mirfield.

Makaton announced that many people had expressed interest in celebrating the day in some way, so they made available downloadable activity booklets with ideas for how people can host their own group Sing and Sign session. The activity booklets also included templates of colourful flags and bunting in Makaton colours for people to use in arts and crafts sessions.

Residents learned the signs for lyrics to some golden oldie tunes, and some more recent upbeat and catchy pop songs! They were able to follow the lyrics on screen, whilst our Speech and Language Team were on hand to help our residents and school pupils practice the signs.

Participants in the event were invited to hold and wave their flags up high and wear purple and black or yellow Makaton colours.

Those who prefer using Makaton Symbols were offered a choice to print off a key words from the song and hold it up for a photo.
